The Apple IIgs featured an Ensoniq 5503 DOC wavetable synthesizer built in which was capable of up to 32 simultaneous voices or 16 voices in stereo (the OS also reserves one channel for systems sounds, so the IIgs is often referred to as a 15 voice system). The system featured a built in speaker, or there was an ⅛" headphone jack for external sound output. The sound the Apple IIgs output, however, is only monophonic and a third party adapter was required to de-multiplex the sound back into stereo.
