Microsoft Sound System (also known as Microsoft Windows Sound System) is an ISA sound card first released by Microsoft Corporation in 1992. It was designed to provide multi-media sound capabilities for Windows 3.1, however a number of DOS games included support for the card as well. The card's sound quality was comparable to that of the Sound Blaster 16; it featured 4-operator, 20 voice stereo FM synthesis based on the Yamaha OPL3 (YMF262-M) sound chip. Additionally it could playback stereo 16-bit 48 kHz digital sounds.
