Cartridges were a common method of distributing games on many early consoles and computers; they typically consisted of the game or other program stored in ROM which could be connected via the cartrige slot on the system. When compared with other common media of the era such as cassettes or disks, cartridges had the advantages of the program loading instantly, were more durable and reliable, and didn't require additional hardware such as a disk drive which was often expensive at the time. They were, however, more expensive to manufacture and the ROM size usually didn't offer as much storage space as was available on other media. Use of cartridges began to wane as games became larger and accessories like disk drives were more common.
